Tobacco Stick Flag

While searching in my Dad's barn, I found a pile of century-old tobacco sticks, gnarled from weather and use...and perfect. I quickly shimmied up the rickety old latter up to the hay loft and threw a bunch out the loft window, onto my truck bed below. A flag seemed the perfect project for these old warhorses, perfectly sturdy, perfectly southern, perfectly American.

Ok, now for the how-to. Very simple, really. I started with 9 sticks, painted 5 red, 4 white. The red ones started out as blue (oops), but then quickly got a coat of red on top. I LOVE the way it looks, the blue peeking out, highlighting the grooves, bends, gnarles in the wood. The white, I brushed a coat of Americana craft paint over with a foam brush, leaving some wood to show underneath. I blocked off a square and spray painted that blue. For stars, I tore white rags and tied them on, in an alternating fashion, three on each stick. I took another stick and sawed it in two pieces, arranged the painted sticks on top, drilled pilot holes and screwed in the screws. I made sure to use mismatched screws for that eclectic feel. That's it people! SO SIMPLE and CUTE!

UK Tray Tables

I had an order of True Blue spray paint come in from Krylon, along with some other colors, so I had the idea of making these old tray tables in a UK theme.

I simply sanded the tables, and gave them a good spray with the paint. It really only took one coat, this stuff covers so well! Then, I needed my UK logo. I printed out the logo on some heavy weight photo paper, and cut it out with an exacto knife. Then I layed the stencil onto the top, and blotted some white craft paint on with a sponge. (Be careful not to use too much)

And that's it!

Cosco Metal Folding Chairs Facelift

I bought four of these metal mid-century folding chairs at an auction i attended for $4 each. They were in excellent condition, albeit ugly.

I had some robins egg blue latex semi gloss paint on hand so I brushed on several coats of it on the seat, letting each coat dry for about an hour. I decided on a nautical theme so I found an image that I liked from Google and printed it out onto a manila envelope I cut down to paper size. I exacto-ed the image out, therefore making a stencil. I layed the stencil onto the seat, surrounding it with some cardboard, and sprayed some Krylon Paint + Primer in Pumpkin Orange over the stencil. I took a stick and held the stencil down in spots while I sprayed. Then I spread a thick layer of Mod Podge over the seat and let it dry to seal everything.

And that's it! Here's what they look like now!
